Longtime company executive James McGourlay has made the transition from interim chief executive officer to president, chief client officer at OpenText (OTEX-T), the firm has announced.

The Waterloo, Ont.-based information management software provider said McGourlay will lead OpenText’s global client experience, professional services and renewals organization.

“James is a proven leader with more than 30 years at OpenText, and his career has consistently been anchored in our clients and what is essential to their success,” Tom Jenkins, OpenText's executive chair of the board and chief strategy officer, said in a press release.

“As chief client officer, James will strengthen client experience and renewals, support cloud adoption and advance OpenText’s position as the trusted partner for data and security for enterprise AI.”

Will report to new CEO

McGourlay will report to Ayman Antoun – who is the new chief executive officer of OpenText as of April 20 – and he will continue to serve as a member of the OpenText executive leadership team.

Antoun was named as chief executive officer in late January, after a long career at IBM Canada. He most recently served as president of IBM Americas and was with the company for 32 years, with a two-year hiatus to work with Bell Canada.

During his time at OpenText, which he joined in 1997, McGourlay has held senior leadership roles across sales, customer operations and executive management.

Most recently, as interim chief executive officer, he provided leadership continuity. He had served as interim CEO since August 2025.

McGourlay has helped lead growth in the OpenText customer services team for the Americas, while serving in that team. He sponsored programs such as My Support, Partner Support Program, quality audits and enhanced customer support programs. McGourlay helped spearhead the movement toward integrations management, social engagement support for customers and continued improvements to the customer experience.

James was also instrumental in the company’s early acquisitions and he was a member of the OpenText enterprise deployment board, which he chaired until 2010.

Duggan stepping down as president, chief customer officer

The company also announced that effective April 20, Paul Duggan stepped down from his position as president, chief customer officer and will continue to serve as executive vice-president, special advisor.

He will also remain a member of the OpenText executive leadership team until his departure from OpenText on July 1.

Founded in 1991, OpenText grew out of a partnership between the University of Waterloo and Oxford University to create the first online Oxford English Dictionary.

Today it has more than 20,000 employees and operates in 180 countries. In 2025, it made more than $5.1 billion in revenue and $436 in income, according to the company.
